City of science and culture

With a population of over one million people, Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region. It is famous both for science and culture, being home for over 20 leading universities and colleges, research institutes, natural science museums, art museums, and other centers of learning. Because of its lush greenery, Sendai is known as the “City of Trees.” Famed for its fresh seafood and succulent Sendai beef, especially gyuutan-yaki char-grilled ox-tongue, Sendai is also known as a gourmet heaven. The city has excellent facilities able to host a wide range of events from academic conferences and sporting events to exhibitions and concerts.
Sendai’s accommodations are also highly rated, and the wealth of after-convention opportunities includes events like the Jozenji-dori Street Jazz Festival and the Tanabata Festival, one of the three biggest summer festivals in Tohoku. Close by are the Akiu and Sakunami onsen resorts, Mt. Zao, and Matsushima Bay, long famed for its scenic beauty.

100 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen

A major advantage of Sendai is its ease and speed of access. In addition to the great convenience of the Tohoku Shinkansen, which connects the city to Tokyo in about 100 minutes, there are regular flights from Sendai Airport to five international destinations including Seoul and Taipei.
