A modern city with an important place in railway history

Saitama City developed as a rail transportation hub, later becoming an important part of the bullet train network, and is the location of Japan's largest railway museum. Even earlier, this was a post station on the Nakasendo, a major route during the Edo Period. Old traditions still alive here include a booming bonsai market and an active doll making industry. Several facilities are available for conventions of all sizes, led by the Saitama Super Arena with its multiple facilities that include a main arena, a stadium and exhibition halls. There is also the 31-story Omiya Sonic City with its halls, hotel and meeting rooms. Saitama City is a base not only for international conferences and exhibitions, but also for sporting events. The city was a host for the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and the 2003 NBA Japan Games.
