City of history and clear flowing rivers

The beautiful Nagaragawa River runs through the heart of Gifu, which also contains within its boundaries the lushly-wooded Mt. Kinka, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Gifu is famed for its 1,300-year-old tradition of cormorant fishing and for its many historical sites such as Gifu Castle, closely linked to the famous feudal lord, Oda Nobunaga (1534 - 1582).
It is the site of World Event and Convention Complex Gifu, a huge international convention complex with a unique design that allows several sporting, cultural or business events and conventions to be held simultaneously within walking distance of each other. Comprising three high-capability, multi-use facilities, it can host huge events.

  • Local Speciality:

Ayu (sweet fish) Dishes: This area is well known for it's cormorant ayu fishing "Ukai" on the Nagaragawa river, a tradition which has been continuing for over 1300 years. The natural ayu from the Nagaragawa river is truly delicious, and used in many local dishes such as ayu broiled with salt, tempura, sushi wrapped with bamboo leaves, fermented sushi, and porridge.
For a very long time, the mountainous area of Gifu has been known for its abundance of medicinal herbs. The handpicked yakuzen (medicinial herb) dishes served at the Nagaragawa hot spring Inn are truly amiable on both the eye and the tongue.
The Nagaragawa water system is the perfect environment for growing edamame. The edamame grown here are big, dark in color, and sweet, and as a result, this is one of the biggest edamame-producing areas in Japan.

    Place to visit:

Cormorant Ayu Fishing "Ukai" of the Nagaragawa River: It is a 1300 year old summer tradition of Gifu City, which is held between May 11th and October 15th. In the darkness of the night 6 members of the Board of the Ceremonies of Imperial Household Agency go down the river with a blazing torch and fish with the cormorant. Watching the gallant and elegant ritual makes you feel as though you are in a historic picture scroll.
National Historic Site, Gifu Castle Remains: Located 329m above sea level at the pinnacle of Mt. Kinka, the castle offers a vast view which inspired a worriar, Nobunaga Oda, to set out to unify all of Japan.
